The recent factory fire in Derrimut in Melbourne’s west, has highlighted the critical importance of chemical safety and the need for proactive measures and appropriate controls when storing and handling dangerous goods.

More than 180 firefighters responded to the frightening scene at ACB Group’s facility on Wednesday, July 10 where toxic black smoke billowed into the air.

ACB Group’s website says it has “grown to become one of the largest chemical contract manufacturers”.

44 gallon chemical drums were seen flying through the air as they exploded. Fireballs and thick smoke were see from kilometres away.

It took more than four hours for crews to bring the blaze “under control”, but it was expected to take days to fully extinguish the fire.

Chemical Fires, Community and Environmental Safety

Fire Rescue Victoria personnel told the ABC the warehouse was full of “multiple types of chemicals” including methylated spirits, kerosene and ethanol.

The impact of chemical incidents can extend beyond the immediate workplace.

Surrounding communities and the environment can also be affected by the release of hazardous substances.

In the case of the Derrimut fire, warnings were issued for surrounding suburbs, urging residents to take shelter indoors and close windows, doors, and vents and switch off cooling and heating systems to avoid exposure to “thick black smoke”.

Although investigators had not yet determined the cause of the blaze at time of writing, the hazards associated with a chemical incident were clear.

The day after the blaze began, FRV Deputy Commissioner Joshua Fisher said the scene was still an “active fire area”.

“There’s still lots of contaminants,” he said.

“There’s contaminated water runoff that we need to manage so at this time the investigation is ongoing.”

Environmental Protection Agency chief environmental scientist Jen Martin told the ABC managing the water runoff from the fire was proving a challenge.

"Because of the sheer volume of the water and the complexity of the drain network, some of that fire water has migrated downstream and we’re expecting to see that water move through waterways," she said.

"Some of these chemicals will be diluted as they move downstream but we know that there are impacts that include highly odorous water that has migrated from this site."

In many incidents involving chemical spills or contamination, the full extend of the impact on the community and environment can take weeks, months or even years to be revealed.

A Word from Storemasta’s CEO

Storemasta CEO Caleb Urquhart said his thoughts were with the workers, first responders and residents of areas impacted.

“I don't make any assumptions about the specific circumstances that led to this disastrous event,” he said.

“When something like this happens, it’s important we all take a minute to remember you can never be too careful when it comes to chemical safety in the workplace. Especially in our industry.”

Mr Urquhart said the incident should serve as a call to action for all organisations and individuals involved in the handling of dangerous goods.

“Together, we can prevent accidents, protect lives, and safeguard the environment. Stay safe, stay informed, and stay proactive in chemical safety,” he said.

“Our first responders are out there facing dangerous and complicated situations every day."

“It's our responsibility to do what we can and put controls in place, to protect them, as well as our staff, colleagues, community and environment.”

Avoiding Fire and Explosion with Chemicals: Flammable Liquids and Safety Protocols

Many flammable liquids, when not stored and handled correctly, can pose significant risks, leading to explosions, fires, and the release of toxic fumes.

The presence of unknown toxins and the aggressive nature of the fire underscore the need for rigorous safety protocols.

To prevent such incidents, it is essential to adopt a proactive approach to chemical safety

Here are some key measures:

  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular and thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards associated with the storage and handling of chemicals.
  • Proper Storage Solutions: Utilise appropriate storage solutions that are designed to contain hazardous materials securely, preventing leaks, spills, and reactions that could lead to explosions or fires.
  • Training and Education: Ensure all employees are well-trained in chemical safety protocols and emergency response procedures. Knowledge and preparedness can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.
  • Clear Labelling and Documentation: Clearly label all chemicals and provide detailed safety data sheets (SDS) to inform workers of the risks and necessary safety measures.
  • Safety Systems and Equipment: Invest in adequate ventilation systems, fire suppression systems, and spill containment measures to manage and mitigate potential risks effectively.
  • Regular Maintenance and Inspections: Schedule routine inspections and maintenance of storage facilities and safety equipment to ensure they are in good working condition and comply with safety standards.

The Importance of Learning from Incidents

While it is crucial not to make assumptions or place blame, every incident provides valuable lessons. The Derrimut factory fire is no exception.

It highlights the need for continuous improvement in safety protocols and the importance of always being vigilant. Learning from such events can help prevent future occurrences and enhance overall safety practices.
